Judy Lui is a Hong Kong–based cellist, conductor, and educator whose career spans performance, ensemble leadership, and music pedagogy. A dedicated musician since childhood, she began junior studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) under Dr. Letty Poon and, after completing Form 3 at Heep Yunn School, received early admission to HKAPA’s bachelor programme in recognition of her talent. During her training, she pursued chamber music actively, taking masterclasses with the Penderecki, Chilingirian, Endellion, and Szymanowski quartets and the Suk Chamber Orchestra. She also studied with renowned cellists including Qiang Tu, Richard Bamping, Alexander Rudin, Apichai Leanthong, François Salque, and Steven Isserlis. Her performance experience includes cello duets with Trey Lee and collaborations with Chopin Competition laureate Colleen Lee. After graduation, she joined the Hong Kong String Orchestra and the Macao Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, and has performed with the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Women’s Orchestra.
As an educator, Judy has taught and coached at National Taiwan University, the Macao Youth Symphony Orchestra Association, and the University of Macau Orchestra. She has served on the faculty of the Hong Kong Music School and as Assistant Music Officer at the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Trained in conducting at the Conn‑Selmer Institute and in masterclasses with Kirk Trevor and Paul Nadler, she has led youth ensembles including Hong Kong Youth Strings and the Hong Kong Junior Chamber Ensemble, guest‑conducted the Hong Kong Flute Philharmonic, and adjudicated regional competitions. As founder and artistic director of Pochen Strings, one of Hong Kong’s few cello ensembles, she presents community concerts across the city. In 2023, she led students to perform at Prize Winners’ Concert in New York Carnegie Hall and in a cello competition in Chicago, reinforcing her commitment to artistic excellence and cultural exchange.
